What is Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a thick tissue band connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It is the strongest tendon in the body and one of the most commonly injured tendons. The Achilles tendon allows us to point our feet up and down and aids in walking, running, and jumping.

Most Achilles tendon injuries occur when the tendon is overstretched or torn. This can happen during activities that stress the tendon, such as sprinting or changing directions quickly.  This type tendon injury can be very painful and make it difficult to walk or even stand up. There may be a popping or snapping sound when the injury occurs. Swelling and bruising often occur soon after the injury.

You can also develop achilles tendonitis through daily activities. Going from a higher heeled shoe to a flat shoe, barefoot or even from prolonged sitting and standing. Usually, only a small part of the tendon is damaged.

If you think you have Achilles tendinitis or a tear, it is important to see a doctor right away. Depending on the severity of your injury, treatment may include rest, ice, elevation, stretching exercises, physical therapy, bracing, or even surgery in extreme cases.

Do Achilles Tendon Braces Work?

Achilles tendon braces are designed to support the Achilles tendon and help prevent further injury. Many who have used Achilles tendon braces report increased stability and pain relief. In addition, wearing an Achilles tendon brace reduces the risk of re-injury after Achilles tendon surgery.

A 2021 study supports this claim by reporting that walking boots speed up the healing process. The results showed that patients who wore an Achilles tendon brace had significantly less pain and disability than those who did not. Additionally, patients who wore a brace were able to return to their activities sooner than those who did not wear a brace.

What is the Fastest Way to Heal an Achilles Tendon?

The best support for an Achilles tendon is a combination resting braces and using a brace while on your feet.

Stretching exercises help the Achilles tendon improve its range of motion. Strengthening exercises help to build up the muscles around the Achilles tendon, providing additional support.

Achilles tendon braces provide compressive support to the Achilles tendon, helping to reduce strain on the tendon, improve circulation to that area. Using a proper brace while resting to help keep the tendon in a neutral position and a brace during activity to help prevent and reduce pain is the best brace strategy.

When choosing an Achilles tendon bracing plan, it is important to select those braces that are comfortable, fits well and suits your lifestyle.
