Ankle bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that helps cushion and reduce friction between bones, tendons, muscles, and skin around the ankle.
Ankle bursitis can develop when a bursa becomes irritated from repeated pressure, friction or overuse. It may be caused by repetitive activities such as walking, running or sports, poorly fitting footwear, a sudden increase in activity, or an injury to the ankle or heel. Certain foot mechanics or movement patterns may also place additional stress on the area and contribute to irritation.
Ankle bursitis may hurt during walking, running, climbing stairs or other activities that place pressure on the ankle or heel. Pain can also increase when wearing tight or restrictive footwear, when the affected area is touched, or after long periods of standing or activity.
Reducing pressure and irritation around the affected area can help manage ankle bursitis. Proper footwear, activity modification and appropriate ankle support may help reduce discomfort while allowing the area to recover. If pain or swelling persists, an assessment can help determine the cause and identify the right support or treatment approach.
